Cat transport carrier - soft or plastic etc.?
Cat transport carrier - soft or plastic etc.?
Dear All,
Looks like the 1st thing needed for my expected cat would be the cat transport bag - to bring him to the new home by car.
It will be also used for visits to vet etc., and also for longer trips - (dreams mode on)how knows if we can take him to a journey with us to Schwarzwald or Mosel (dreams mode off ).
Could you please help me to chose the right bag for us?
1. Material and design:
- Hard/plasic - https://www.zooplus.nl/shop/katten/tran ... hes/471584
- Soft/fabric - https://www.zooplus.nl/shop/katten/tran ... hes/490956
- Or just a travel bag - https://www.zooplus.nl/shop/katten/tran ... ixie/26027
2. What should be the right size for a maine coon male cat (or perhaps it is better to take a smaller one for the first time and later to buy another big for the adult cat)? Would 60-70cm length be enough?
3. Should we look for any special functionalities like "windows", opening top etc.?
Thank you

Re: Cat transport carrier - soft or plastic etc.?
I personally want more comfort for the cat, and for the owner if possible. I can’t view your links because I’m on a slow connection. But we bought an actual backpack (bag that you carry on your bag) for our cats. 1 per cat so we have 3. Not very big, I can imagine we need to buy bigger ones if they grow big. It’s comfortable for the cats and easy for us to carry on the bike.
For longer trips you might want to consider a “bench” like they have for dogs, that you can put on your backseat. This way they can maybe both be in one space, have some food & water and a litter box. But this is not conviniant for vet visits

Bedankt, it looks very nice and seems to be very handy.KiwiNL schreef: ↑18 aug 2018 19:59 I have this one and I'm very content with it:

And I understood the concept .
The only concern is the size/max weight for a maine coon cat which is expected to be close to the upper weight limit.
Also 50cm length may be a bit too short for a grown Maine Coon...
Thank you for sharing your experience!KleinDraakje schreef: ↑18 aug 2018 21:01 I personally want more comfort for the cat, and for the owner if possible. I afraid that the backpack option may be less convenient for an adult Maine Coon male cat and for a carrier but the dog-like bench is an option indeed! Please see below - on faster connection when possible, please .
Dear All, what do you think about these ones:
1. https://m.zooplus.nl/shop/katten/transp ... hes/471584 (S-size)
2. https://m.zooplus.nl/shop/katten/transp ... hes/471845 - more convenient with its "top load" possibility but also looks more fragile and its quality is questionnable, quite a lot of complains about this at Amazon.
3. AmazonBasics pet carrier from Amazon: 58cm length with the top-load option and good feedbacks
Re: Cat transport carrier - soft or plastic etc.?

I asked another Coon breeder and got told that the carrier size should be at least 60cm long.

Re: Cat transport carrier - soft or plastic etc.?
My cat is big (7+ kilo) and outgrew the normal box pretty fast.
I have this one now:
https://m.zooplus.nl/shop/katten/transp ... hes/471916
I would take a plastic one, they are sturdier and I’m pretty sure Hans can not escape.
Ferplast is a good brand. An open top is easier to put them in (specially the big boys).
I don’t use mine often so I opted for the cheaper version. Otherwise the atlas 30 open might be an option?
https://dierencompleet.nl/product/ferpl ... rvoersbox/
For longer trips I would use the biggest bench that fits your car They’re easy to find second hand (marktplaats)

Re: Cat transport carrier - soft or plastic etc.?
RodeKaterHans , thank you for the reply and useful links .
I believe that both these boxes are of the almost the same size, right?
How safe is the top door - it is combined with the handle carrying the whole box?
The Amazon basic pet carrier was criticized for this - there is a chance of opening or even falling down the whole box while it was carried with a heavier cat inside.

Re: Cat transport carrier - soft or plastic etc.?
No problem! Yes, I think they differ like 1 or 2 cm. And yes the handle is combined, I think for the ferplast it’s combined as well. I was a little hesitant but with a 7,5 kilo cat it is fine. You should make sure the switches are in place. (And for longer walks I would just carry the entire thing, but I would do that with most carriers)

RodeKaterHans, bedankt!
